Pray for the Holy Spirit to Open Eyes to See Four Things

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer A to Z

For those we are witnessing to, we should pray that the Holy Spirit would open their spiritual eyes to see these four things:

1  That they would see that they are lost.  By lost I mean those who are separated from God because of their sin—for the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23).  They are lost not because they have sinned (for all have sinned), but because they have not found a remedy for their sin.  I think a good description of the lost are those who don’t know the truth and therefore can’t find their way to God.

Pray that the Holy Spirit would help them to see their sin and to see that God’s penalty for sin is eternal separation from Him.

2  That they would see the certainty of hell.  As we have already discussed, the horrors of hell are certain for all that…

The Overall Nature of the Tribulation

You have seen the nature of the Tribulation in four different categories: a day of destruction and disaster, a time of trouble and distress, a day of vengeance and wrath, and a time of fear and terror. However, we need to be mindful that all of the different categories will be present and intermixed in all of the Tribulation. Also, know that many of the horrors will be present at the same time, overlapping each other.  While there is a great earthquake, causing great fear, at the same time people will be suffering from malignant sores, and also from the pain of scorpion stings. And while many are sick and dying from polluted and poisoned water, they may also be suffering from the terrible heat of the sun.

And then, besides the pain of the body, there will be a deep-down anguish of soul caused by isolation and aloneness, and the loss of friends. This inner pain and despair may be what Zephaniah was trying to describe (in Zeph. 1:15).

A day of trouble and distress,

A day of destruction and desolation,

A day of darkness and gloom,

A day of clouds and thick darkness,

And then, I think there will be a great inner suffering caused by a sense of guilt, and from disappointment one may feel about his life. And I suppose this inner suffering will be heightened as the wrath of God comes upon the earth, as they will be more aware of their sins and their pending punishment. Isaiah 2:19 says,

And men will go into caves of the rocks,

And into holes of the ground

Before the terror of the Lord.

Also, in Isaiah 13:6-9 it says,

Wail, for the day of the Lord is near!

It will come as destruction from the Almighty.

7 Therefore all hands will fall limp,

And every man’s heart will melt.

8 And they will be terrified,

Pains and anguish will take hold of them;

They will writhe like a woman in labor,

They will look at one another in astonishment,

Their faces aflame.

9 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming,

Of course, those who repent of their sins will have their anguish eased by the forgiveness of God. But those who do not repent, but continue in sin and to blaspheme God out of a hardened heart, God will give them over to a depraved mind (Rom. 1:26-28); and their pain and misery will continue on and on.

Furthermore, it is quite clear from Scripture that the pain and trouble of the Tribulation will get progressively worse from judgment to judgment. The trumpet judgments will be of greater intensity than the seal judgments, and the bowl judgments will be of greater intensity and destructiveness than the trumpets. It is hard to imagine such great Tribulation, but we must believe it. There is no way to get around it, to explain it away. It will happen.

Lastly, I must say something about the devastation that the Tribulation will cause on the earth. I suppose many don’t think about it, or dismiss it. But Scripture seems to emphasize it over and over. Isaiah 24:1 says, “Behold, the Lord lays the earth waste, devastates it, distorts its surface, and scatters its inhabitants.” And He does this by both natural means and supernatural means, as He brings great earthquakes and volcanoes and fire and wind and falling stars and demons! It will be so terrible that mountains will be moved, or will disappear (Rev. 6:14, 16:20), and cities will fall (be destroyed). And I think most of the earth will be unrecognizable. It will be torn apart by earthquakes, devastated by high winds (hurricanes and tornados) and hail, and burned by fire everywhere.

I know that many (or some) will survive it somehow, somewhere; but I think, for the most part, the earth will be laid waste.

Jesus and the Pharisees: John 12:42-43

This is our fortieth and last study. Please click HERE for an introduction to this study.

John 12:42-43

Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

Observations

There was a great tension among the Jewish leaders. Those who believed secretly dared not speak up openly because of the stricter Pharisees. So it seemed that they valued there job and position more than their faith. Their faith was weak; they still loved the praise of men more than how God regarded them.

Application

We ought to always evaluate what is more important. If we truly believe in God, we ought to show it and not be ashamed. We ought to believe as Paul did when he said, “For a I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation…”

Two Things to Pray For Those We Intend To Witness To

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer A to Z

Notice that these requests pertain to their liberty: that they would be free from the bonds of Satan—to hear and receive the gospel.

First request: that the Holy Spirit would prepare the soil of their heart for the seed of the gospel.

Preparation is so important.  As the farmer prepares the soil (as he turns the ground over with the plow, runs the disc and the rake over the ground, and fertilizes and waters the soil so that the seed he plants will germinate) so must the Holy Spirit prepare the heart of the lost soul to receive the seed of the gospel.  For the Word of God will not be heard, will not penetrate a heart that is hard and callused by sin.  Therefore, let us pray for the Holy Spirit to begin that process of preparing the soil of hearts, especially of those you plan…

Why Do Some People Laugh So Much? Three Reasons

I have been reading the popular book Pilgrim’s Progress, by John Bunyan. It is the story of pilgrims on their journey through life to the Celestial City—or heaven. When I got to the part where Christian met two characters named Formality and Hypocrisy, and according to their conversation, especially the way it ended, I thought of Kamala Harris.

I should give you more details of the conversation. When Christian noticed that Formality and Hypocrisy did not go through the gate that our Lord had required, he said to them,

Why did you not come in at the gate at the beginning of the way? …I walk by the rule of the Lord of the way; you follow your own fancy…you come in by yourselves without direction, and you shall go out by yourselves without His mercy.

And so the conversation went. And the two also had their own arguments. However, at the end, Formality and Hypocrisy “gave no answer, but looked at each other and laughed.”

Well, as I said, I immediately thought of Kamala Harris, because she also often laughs for no apparent reason when faced with a problematic situation. But why does she laugh? Or why do so many others like her laugh? Here are three reasons I came up with:

  • Like Formality and Hypocrisy and Kamala, they know nothing of the truth. They go through the motions, but for them everything is relative; and therefore, all truth means nothing, so they laugh it off.
  • They laugh to escape reality and truth. It is the way they cope with it.
  • It is natural for a non-Christian to think that God’s truth is foolish; so, they laugh at it. They will laugh at all that is truly true.

The Nature of the Tribulation: A Time of Fear and Terror

In the following passages the words fear, terror, dread, and tremble in bold indicate to us how those on the earth greatly feared the Tribulation—mainly because they knew it came directly from the great wrath of God.

Isaiah 2:19

And men will go into caves of the rocks,

And into holes of the ground

Before the terror of the Lord,

And before the splendor of His majesty,

When He arises to make the earth tremble.

Isaiah 13:6-9

Wail, for the day of the Lord is near!

It will come as destruction from the Almighty.

7 Therefore all hands will fall limp,

And every man’s heart will melt.

8 And they will be terrified,

Pains and anguish will take hold of them;

They will writhe like a woman in labor,

They will look at one another in astonishment,

Their faces aflame.

9 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming,

Cruel, with fury and burning anger,

To make the land a desolation;

And He will exterminate its sinners from it.

Jeremiah 30:4-7

Now these are the words which the Lord spoke concerning Israel and concerning Judah, 5 “For thus says the Lord,

‘I have heard a sound of terror,

Of dread, and there is no peace.

6 ‘Ask now, and see,

If a male can give birth.

Why do I see every man

With his hands on his loins, as a woman in childbirth?

And why have all faces turned pale?

7 ‘Alas! for that day is great,

There is none like it;

And it is the time of Jacob’s distress,

But he will be saved from it.

Zephaniah 1:18

Neither their silver nor their gold

Will be able to deliver them

On the day of the Lord’s wrath;

And all the earth will be devoured

In the fire of His jealousy,

For He will make a complete end,

Indeed a terrifying one,

Of all the inhabitants of the earth.

Luke 21:25-26

“And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

Revelation 6:15-17

And the kings of the earth and the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every slave and free man, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains; 16 and they said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; 17 for the great day of their wrath has come; and who is able to stand?”

Jesus and the Pharisees: John 12:17-19

This is our thirty-ninth study. Please click HERE for an introduction to this study.

John 12:17-19

Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”

Observations

The common people were amazed at Jesus’ miracles and wanted to meet Him. In contrast, the Pharisees wanted to kill Him. They were so discouraged that Jesus was taking away their popularity.

Application

Beware if those who are discouraged at people who are doing good things. For some of our leaders, it matters not what good they do. It only matters to them whether they are profiting from it.

Prayer for Three Essentials in Witnessing

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer A to Z

Three absolute essentials for witnessing are these: guidance, faith, and to keep a close relationship with God.

For guidance in witnessing.  As we go out, boldly, into the world to witness, we need guidance.  Many (including myself) have witnessed boldly but have miserably failed because they lacked guidance.

In this regard, I urge you fellow believers to make Christ Lord in your heart, and pray that He would prepare your heart to witness—that He would make you willing and able to witness (1 Pet. 3:15); also, that He would fill you with knowledge and discernment, and that you would be so full of the love and compassion of Christ that others would see it and give glory to God (Matt. 5:16).

Secondly, with your heart more prepared, pray for the Holy Spirit to lead you to those He wants you to witness to—to those He has prepared…

The Latest Trump News

Trump recently reminded our Democrat leaders of the continual invasion at our southern border. He stated that they are so concerned over the possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, but don’t seem to care about the invasion into our own country.

Trump a few days ago hinted at pardons for many of the Jan. 6 rioters—if he gets re-elected in 2024.

Yes, I think many of them should be pardoned. So many of them have been unjustly jailed.

Last Tuesday (2/1/22) attorneys for former President Trump and two of his children, filed a complaint against NY AG Letitia James that she has broken state laws in a politically motivated investigation of their business. Here is the article I saw on Fox News.

Trump family complaint alleges NY AG Letitia James broke state laws in politically motivated investigation

A new court filing from the Trump family accuses New York Attorney General Letitia James of abandoning legal principals in an attempt to gain political support as she continues a three-year investigation into the family’s business practices.

The complaint, which was filed Tuesday by attorneys for former President Trump and two of his children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, alleges that James has “repeatedly threatened investigation and prosecution” of the Trump family to “garner votes, money and support, and now, as Attorney General, to gain political support.”

James recently issued subpoenas for Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. in connection with an ongoing civil investigation. Those subpoenas sought testimony and documents “in connection with an investigation into the valuation of properties owned or controlled by Donald J. Trump or the Trump Organization, or any matter which the Attorney General deems pertinent thereto.”

A preliminary statement included in the filing, which alleged James sidestepped the state constitution, claimed the office of New York’s attorney general (OAG) “runs from the words of Letitia James, deliberately avoiding the fact that she has taken equal ownership of the current criminal case and the ongoing grand jury investigation” targeting the Trump family.

The complaint targets James for her “blatant and obvious attempt to suppress [Donald Trump’s] voice, interfere with his political ambitions and silence the will of millions of voters” over the last three years, as well as her efforts to collude with former New York County District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. to run parallel investigations.

A series of arguments presented in the filing accuses New York’s chief law enforcement officer of having violated Criminal Procedural Law (CPL) 190.40 and the New York constitution when issuing the Trump family subpoenas.

“The New York Constitution, as interpreted by the Court of Appeals, and the CPL promulgated thereunder, created protections for subpoenaed witnesses that federal law does not provide,” the filing stated. “Under the New York Constitution and the CPL, an agency conducting a criminal investigation through an active grand jury is required, if the witness is subpoenaed, to examine the subject or target of the investigation before the grand jury.”

The filing concludes James’ “investigation and prosecution [is] based solely on political animus” and that “such selective prosecution violates the Equal Protection Clauses of the Federal and New York States Constitutions and requires that the subpoenas be quashed.”

Donald Trump had sued James in December, seeking to end the investigation after she requested that he sit for a Jan. 7 deposition. That lawsuit, filed in federal court, alleges that the probe has violated his constitutional rights in a “thinly-veiled effort to publicly malign Trump and his associates.”

Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump, who serves as the executive vice president of the Trump Organization, was already questioned by James’ office in October 2020, the New York Times reported. James’ office went to court to enforce a subpoena on the younger Trump, and a judge forced him to testify after his lawyers abruptly canceled a previously scheduled deposition, according to The Associated Press.

Fox News

It sure seems to me that this NY AG is going far beyond her authority and trying to make a name for herself in taking down the great Donald Trump. There are plenty of evils in New York that she could better use her time at.
