Daniel 9:24: Christ Will Make an End of Israel’s Sin

Daniel 9:24

24 “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.  NASB

In this second point of promise, “to make an end of sin,” the focus is on the fact that Israel’s sins will be taken away and their hearts will be made clean.  “To make” suggests that someone makes it happen.  That someone is Christ.  In Hebrews 9:26 we read, “…He has been manifested to put away sin…”

Thus this prophecy points to what Paul said in Romans 11:26-27,

“The Deliverer will come from Zion,
He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.”
27 “And this is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins.”

Communication with God

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer A to Z

The following article is an excerpt from this book.

Prayer is not only petition, it is also something more basic—it is soul to soul communication with God.  And this really must come first, before we ask God for anything.  For this is the heart of prayer.  Before we can expect Him to listen to our requests we must have made contact with His soul by our soul.

I got this idea from Jim Downing in his book Meditation, where he suggests that various passages in the Psalms (e.g. Ps. 62:5, 130:6, 25:1) “indicate that coming into contact with God involves the soul.”  And he stated that “Theologians in general agree as to the soul’s principle powers…the mind, the affections and the will.”

So I am suggesting that “coming into contact with God” with our souls is really what prayer is.  True prayer, therefore, will involves the mind, the affections (the…

To Finish the Transgression: Israel’s Rejection of Her Messiah Will Come to an End — From Daniel 9:24

Daniel 9:24

Seventy weekshave been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place. NASB

Transgression spoken of here is certainly what Daniel had prayed about in verse eleven: “Yes all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice…”  Therefore, Israel’s transgression was a blatant disobedience to God, which is rebellion against God and a rejection of His laws and teachings.

But the definite article attached to the word in verse 24—the transgression—suggests that there is a more specific transgression that Israel as a nation is guilty of.  We don’t see the definite article in verse eleven, I suppose because Daniel is not aware of any specific sin…

Confidence in Prayer

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer A to Z

The following article is an excerpt from Prayer A to Z.

When we think about confidence, even when we say the word “confidence,” it makes us feel good doesn’t it?  It gives us a lift, gives us energy, strength and courage.  And I suppose that is because the word is so much associated with positive energy.  And whether we believe it or not, that energy comes from God.  It is a special gift that He has given to all people—the energy, the drive to believe and have hope in themselves and in the gifts that they possess.  Yes, we are all created in His image; and since God Himself has self-confidence—believing and having hope in Himself—all people down deep within themselves have this same self-confidence too.  It is inherent in the way He has created us.

But listen to this: God gives a special confidence (a more powerful and more…

Daniel 9:24: Seventy Weeks Have Been Decreed for Israel

Stephen Nielsen's avatarStudying Bible Prophecy

Daniel 9:24

Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy place.  NASB

Have been decreed forThis term may reveal more than you think.  It could either be translated as “are determined for,” “are decreed for,” or “have been decreed for.”  The preposition “for” may also be translated as “upon.”  The basic meaning of this verb is “cut” or “divide.”  According to Barns, “The meaning would seem to be, that this portion of time—the seventy weeks—was “cut off” from the whole of duration, or cut out of it, as it were, and set by itself for a definite purpose.”  Dr. Leon Wood (from Thomas Ice’s commentary) says, “The thought is that…

Burden in Prayer

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer A to Z

The following article is an excerpt from this book.

Prayer is all about carrying burdens, not only the burdens of people but the burdens of God.  He calls us to be burden bearers with Him for people, for the sake of His kingdom.

 THE BURDEN OF GOD

Throughout the Bible we see the great love and compassion of God toward all people.  Psalms 86:15 tells us, “He is full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.”

Jesus was and is full of compassion toward us too.  While He was on this earth He was always going about from city to city preaching and teaching God’s good news; and He was healing all who were sick and diseased.  And when He saw the multitudes He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd (Matt. 9:35-36).  And now…

Daniel 9:3-27: Daniel’s Prayer and God’s Immediate Answer

Stephen Nielsen's avatarStudying Bible Prophecy

Daniel prayingIn an earlier post I mentioned how Daniel’s prophecy (Daniel 9:24-27) clearly shows both the time line and the purpose of the rapture. We will continue now in this post to look at the situation of the prophecy, which is Daniel’s prayer. We will also look briefly at God’s immediate answer, which is the prophecy.

Daniels prayer (Daniel 9:3-19).  From Daniel 9:2 we learn that Daniel knew of the writings of Jeremiah and of his prophecies regarding their seventy years of captivity.  He was also aware of the reason for their captivity: mainly because for so long they had not obeyed the Lord in keeping the laws of the Sabbath rest; thus by their exclusion God intended to restore the land by giving it rest for the exact number of Sabbath years that it had been violated—seventy years.

Long before Daniel’s time God clearly prophesied these things.

How to Become a Christian

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer A to Z

004 (2)

This article is an excerpt from my book, Prayer A to Z.

There is really only one prayer that a non-Christian can pray with the assurance that God will hear him.  It is the prayer for mercy—from a humble heart that sincerely has decided to go God’s way.   Any other prayers that are uttered by a non-Christian are an abomination to God and are not heard.  Why?  Well, it is not because God is not good.  He is good (Read Matthew 5:43-45).   It is because He can not grant any other request of the unsaved, because they naturally do not do what is right or seek after God (Romans 3:10-11).  Isaiah 64:6 tells us that the unsaved are unclean and all their righteousness are like filthy rags to God.  Therefore, God will not listen to their prayers because all their requests are made with selfish, ungodly motives.

Listen to what…

How Daniel 9:24-27 Shows Us the Rapture—An Introduction

Stephen Nielsen's avatarStudying Bible Prophecy

The rapture is never mentioned in the Old Testament. It was kept a secret until the New Testament.  But through our enlightenment provided by the New Testament, we see now that Daniel 9:24-27 clearly shows both the time line and the purpose of the rapture.  Many have disagreed with this, but those who have taken the time to closely inspect this passage will have to admit that there is something to what I am saying.

If you are at all interested in this topic, stay tuned to my next several blog posts.  But for now, for this particular post, I will just copy the text and let you read it.

UNANSWERED Prayers

Stephen Nielsen's avatarPrayer A to Z

The following article is an excerpt from this book.

Here are three possible reasons why your prayers aren’t answered–from my e-book Prayer A to Z.

1.  You really aren’t abiding in Jesus and His Word as you think you are.  A good test of whether you are abiding or not is whether you bear fruit.  Jesus said, “He who abides in Me, and I in him bears much fruit (Jn. 15:5).  Fruit is that evidence that you are a Christian—a true Christian that abides in Christ and grows to be like Him.

Are you becoming like Christ?  Do you love others as He did?  Do you reach out to others and share the love of God with them?  Do you have the faith that Jesus had?  When you pray do you expect God to answer you?  If you can’t say yes to any of these questions I suggest that…
